1st XI Vs South Woodford

Joe Buttleman described Brentwood Cricket Club's display on Saturday as a "complete performance" as they triumphed over South Woodford.

The visitors included Essex opener Nick Browne, but he had more of an impact with the ball than the bat as Brentwood won by 87 runs, after setting a total of 240 to win in the Shepherd Neame Essex League Premier Division match.

Browne took 3-50 from 18 overs but could make only seven runs with the bat, becoming debutant Jake Wickham's first wicket for the club, after joining from T Rippon Mid Essex League side Old Chelmsfordians.

They followed that up with a fine four-wicket win over Hornchurch in the ECB National Club Championship to make it a perfect weekend for the Brentwood skipper.

"Saturday was a complete performance," said Buttleman. "It was a terrific wicket and they were at full-strength with Nick Browne in their team.

"He bowled excellently and I don't think it'll be long before Essex start using him.

"Aaron [West] batted well again, James Redwood came back and played well and then we bowled in partnerships, with Jake Wickham taking Nick Browne as his first league wicket."

All Brentwood's bowlers took a wicket as South Woodford were all out for 152 in reply. Charlie Griffiths starred with 3-10 off 9.4 overs, as Peter Younghusband (2-36 off 16), Ian Belchamber (2-43 off 13), Wickham (2-38 off six) and Buttleman (1-14 from five) all chipped in.

"That's the most pleasing thing," said Buttleman. "We're not relying on myself or Charlie, everyone worked hard and was excellent and it gives us a lot of confidence."

West once again top-scored, this time with 55 after making 65 against reigning champions Chingford the previous week.

His recent form earned him selection for Essex second XI against Gloucestershire seconds last week, but he failed to make the most of the chance, scoring nought and seven.

"He's looking good again and when he gets that opportunity for the second XI he just needs to take it," said Buttleman.

This Saturday, Brentwood travel to Loughton for a fixture that was controversially called off last year, with the hosts saying the outfield was waterlogged from overnight rain. Buttleman visited the ground but found it locked up and said he could only see one damp patch.

"There'll be some payback for that," said Buttleman.
