Brentwood won by 25 runs

Congratulations to Brentwood CC Under-13s who have reached the National Stage Group Final of the NatWest U13 National Club Championship after defeating Copdock & Old Ipswichians on Sunday.

The Suffolk team won the toss and asked Brentwood to bat on a hot afternoon at the Old County Ground and the home team lost the early wicket of Henry Deacon. But Callum Balsom was joined by Will Davey and they began to build a partnership against some good bowling from Copdock’s opening attack of Sam Paisley and James Whittle. The stand was broken when Davey was bowled by Paisley for 14. Jack Levy joined Balsom and they enjoyed a valuable partnership before both were forced to retire having reached individual scores of 30 or more. Jacob Knightbridge (9 not out), Louis Morris (11) and PJ Jaques (8) all made good contributions as Brentwood finished on 135-5 from their 20 overs.

The Copdock reply began well with some fine batting from openers Will Marston and Will Froggatt who between them found the boundary eleven times before Marston retired on 31 while Froggatt was well caught by Knightbridge off the bowling of Balsom for 28. Wickets then began to fall at regular intervals and Copdock could not maintain the required run rate against some tight Brentwood bowling, despite Varun Sharma’s 18 not out, and the innings closed 26 runs short of the target. The wicket takers for Brentwood were Knightbridge (1-18), Levy (1-18), Balsom 2-13 and Deacon (2-5).

Brentwood will now meet the winners of Old Albanians (Hertfordshire) or Amersham (Buckinghamshire) in the Group Semi-Final at Horsham CC on Tuesday 2nd August. That match starts at 10.30 am and the winners will reach the Group Final, which will be played at 2pm the same day.  The winners of the final will then progress to the National Finals Day at Rugby School on 16th August.
