Peter Coe Cup
Brentwood won by 2 wickets
Wanstead 119 all out in the 30th over
Brentwood 121 for 8 in 29 overs.
Wanstead won the toss and chose to bat on a scorching afternoon on the Brentwood School Wicket. Alex Berry and Matt Fox got Brentwood off to a great start, having Wanstead on 5 for 1 after the first four very tidy overs. This was followed by a run out and a brilliant catch by Luke Brailey at short extra cover to leave them 18 for 3 from 8 overs. Wanstead then steadied the innings and started to accelerate taking them to 80 from 20 overs but just when it looked like they would really lift the innings Brentwood picked up a couple of wickets and followed this with a number of run outs, getting the final wicket in the last over. Some very tight Brentwood fielding meant Wanstead only picked up 19 runs off the last 5 overs for the loss of four wickets. This was to prove decisive in the end and a good lesson that when you field first every single run counts and may be the difference in the end.
Bowling figures
Alex Berry 6 overs 1 maiden 1 for 11
Matt Fox 5.3/0/2/16
Toby Gifford 6/1/0/23
Isaac Raj 3/0/0/16
James Bainbridge 1/0/0/8
Luke Brailey 4/1/1/21
Andrew Walters 4/1/2/14
In reply James Bainbridge and Alex Berry got Brentwood off to a good start taking us to 17 off 6 over without losing a wicket. However the regular loss of wickets to some very good slow bowling left Brentwood on 60 for 5 after 20 overs and struggling to make the total. Then with excellent support, first from Charlie Bacon, unlucky to get run out when he was batting very well, and then Toby Gifford, Matt Fox set about getting the total on his own. By hitting some big fours interspersed with quick singles he looked like he might get Brentwood home but then with the total on 107 first Toby Gifford and then Matt were out leaving two new batsmen at the crease and a very confident Wanstead who thought the game had swung their way again. However Brandon Kelly, who had earlier kept wicket very well, and Connor Harrington, excellent earlier catch, saw Brentwood home with one over to spare. Brandon, dancing down the wicket to hit the winning runs.
Standout Batsman Matt Fox - 46 but ably supported by Andrew Walters - 12, Alex Berry - 11, Brandon Kelly - 8.
Well done Brentwood Chargers, a fine team effort and thanks to great support from parents with umpiring, scoring and food and drinks a great afternoon all round. Finally a special mention to Lewis Arthur who fielded very well including an early run out and despite feeling very unwell remained at the ground and was padded up ready to bat at number 11 if required. Also thanks to the many Grandparents supporting Brentwood at the game including one, Pat, who's Grandson Jack Payne wasn't even playing. That's commitment for you.
