Match Report | Brentwood’s competitive season got underway with victory over local rivals Hutton in the first round of the Dukes Essex League Cup. It was also a successful first outing for Joe Buttleman as captain, after Jonathan Walford handed in the reigns after seven highly successful years in charge.
Brentwood, last year’s finalists, have a number of new faces in their line up, and it was one of those who set up the Brentwood innings of 259. Tom Oakley scored a chanceless and quickfire 106 from only 116 balls in his first innings in anger in Brentwood’s colours.
Oakley had support from Walford and James Redwood, before Aaron West, who had already scored 300 unbeaten runs for the Unicorns prior to this innings, scored a brutal 54 from only 41 deliveries.
Cameos from Joe Buttleman and Max Osborne allowed Brentwood to an above-par score.
Hutton, recently promoted to Shepherd Neame Division One, never really appeared in the hunt, especially after economical spells from Max Osborne and Tom Moore. Meanwhile, Brentwood's other recent addition, Charlie Griffiths offered clear evidence of his abilities with the ball, picking up two wickets. Hutton's young wicket keeper, Jack Pottiary impressed with the bat, striking the ball cleanly on occasions.
Hutton's total was boosted with late cameos from Jim Crapnell and Simon Thurston to just shy of a 100 run defeat.
Brentwood have another home match against Hainault and Clayhall in the second round next Saturday. |
