NEWCOMERS PROVING THE REAL DEAL FOR THE BUCCANEERS

Brentwood were in dominant form at the OCG as South Woodford were swept aside in convincing style. Captain Buttleman won the toss and elected to bowl, and it proved to be an excellent decision.

Swoodford were quickly up against it with Max Osborne and Thomas Cambridge Moore being particularly stingy when it came to run scoring opportunities. The breakthrough came after a fine catch from Tom Oakley off the bowling of Osborne, and that standard set the tone.

Then entered Charlie Griffiths, who produced a fine exhibition of spin bowling to completely tie up Swoodfords middle order. Finishing with figures of 3-29 off his allotted 10, Grifiths mixed up his pace and variations with aplomb. Accompanied by a solid spell from Buttleman, Brentwood were in the driving seat after 20 overs with the score at 47-5.

Far from becoming complacent, the home side were ruthless and drove home their advantage with further wickets from Moore, Griffiths and a farcical run out that summed up Swoodford’s batting display.

Matt Lancaster made a gritty 35 to give the visitors some hope, finally holing out to Osborne who collected a 3 wicket haul.

Despite losing former skipper Jon Walford early, Brentwood were never in real trouble. Simon Steele signalled his intentions early playing some miraculous shots through the on side and Tom Oakley continued his fine run of form, with both men bringing up their half centuries in the same over.

Steele was caught behind with only 16 runs remaining, leaving Aaron West and Oakley to see Brentwood home.

It was another commanding performance, with the triumvirate of new additions all making telling contributions to what was a fine victory.
