Woodford Wells V Brentwood Victorians 8th June 2014

A beautiful Sunday afternoon sees the Victorians travelling to Woodford Wells. Concerns are now running high for the still missing Bob O’Brien. It has been collectively decided that if he is not at the next game, he should be reported as a missing person.

Woodford only had 7 of their team at the start of the game, so the Vic’s skipper thought it only fair that they bat first.

The bowling was opened by Timmy and Ben Sach, both bowling well but without much luck. It is not possible to state any bowling figures as the Vic’s score book was not copied up! Suffice to say that although the bowling was good, the catching was terrible. It is reckoned that 15 catches went down (10 to the ex first teamer Walford!). Due to the heat, the bowling spells were kept to 4 overs each and a total of 6 bowlers were used. Timmy, Sach, Sam Ali, Prithiv (Pretty), Gary Markham and Jon Hilliard. Sach came back on for his second spell and immediately had a Woodford batsman smartly caught behind by Alford but to no avail as the batsman didn’t walk and the umpire gently shook his head. Woodford Finished their 40 overs on 255.

Walford and Pinkney opened the batting and were well above the required run rate before Pinkney was caught on 23. This brought Beecheno to the crease, and despite being told at tea that he “wasn’t a real batsman”, batted with a steely doggedness to ensure that the Vic’s stayed on track. Walford was next out, caught for 22. Mahadeo came in playing his usual array of technically correct shots but was caught on 17 (note that Woodford did not spill their chances as the Vic’s did).Things were slowing down dramatically. Markham came in and in an attempt to get thing moving, ran himself out for a duck. Hilliard was next and wasted no time trying to get the Vic’s back on track. He played some aggressive shots on his way to 62 before he too was caught. Ali was bowled for 13 chasing the ever increasing run rate. Sach came in at 8 with a belief that the Vic’s could still do this, his first 3 scoring shots all going for 6. But time wasn’t on the Vic’s side and they fell an agonising 6 runs short with Beecheno ending on 64 not out (30 of which were singles). An inquest will now be held to determine who it was that falsely branded him a pretend batman!

Woodford Well won by 6 runs.
