Match Report

Brentwood Victorians V Harold Wood 27th July 2014

After four week of not being able to get eleven players available or opposition cancelling at the last moment, the Vic’s welcomed Harold Wood to the Old County Ground on a bright sticky day that threatened rain later on.

Alford won the toss for only the third time this season and, considering the possibility of rain later on in the day, elected to bat first.

Surajbally and Walford (R) opened the batting watchfully against some tight bowling from Harold Wood. 22 runs were gleaned from the first 7 overs before Surajbally decided that enough was enough and opened his shoulders. 16 runs were scored off the next over! The two openers settled in and started to enjoy themselves before Surajbally was bowled for a well earned 64. Walford was next to go, caught behind for 33. This started a batting collapse with numbers 3, 5, 6, 8 and 9 managing to score just 15 runs between them. Mahadeo, at number 4 was just starting to get into his stride when he fell for 16. Patrick dug in and scored 29 not out by the end of the 40 overs. O’Brien, coming in at 10, looked like he was going to get the tail to wag a little before he too was caught for 9. Alford came in at 11 for the last over and despite scampering up and down the wicket, was unable to get the bat on the ball. The Vic’s were 192 for 9 at the end of the innings. This after they were 110 for 1 off 21 overs.

Markham and O’ Brien kicked off the bowling for the Vic’s. Markham, bowling tight lines, was unlucky not to take any wickets returning figures of 8 overs, 2 maidens for 26 runs. O’ Brien bowled his usual mixture but still managed to pick up 2 wickets for 48 runs. Hull was first change and bowled with considerable venom taking batsmen and the wicket keeper by surprise at times! This paid off with Hull getting 2 wickets, 2 maidens for 21 runs. Patrick and Tyjas came on to bowl, with the Vic’s skipper wondering where the promised rain was, and despite Patrick taking a wicket, they were unable to stem the flow of runs coming from the Harold Wood batsmen who crossed the line in the 38th over.

A close game which resulted in Harold Wood wining by 5 wickets.

It should be noted that every time Alford has won the toss this year, the Vic’s have lost the game.
