Brentwood just nine runs short in Conference final

Saturday 17th September
The Conference Cup Final for the Bertie Joel Trophy

Camberley CC 227 all out, Brentwood 218-9

In a close match staged at Harefield Cricket Club, Brentwood were beaten by Camberley by nine runs in the Conference Cup final.

Camberley were bowled out in the last of their 45 overs for 227, Tom Holden and Sam Holmes helping them recover from 149-7 with an eighth wicket partnership of 68. Jack Levy took four wickets for Brentwood, Tom Oakley two and there was a wicket apiece for Harry Phillips, Ian Belchamber and Harri Smith.

Brentwood’s reply got off to the worst possible start when skipper Aaron West was dismissed first ball of the innings. Runs from Ed Ballard (28), Will Buttleman (42), Tom Oakley (37) and Jack Levy (27) kept Brentwood in the chase and from 173-8 Gabriel Austin and Harri Smith put on 31 runs to keep their hopes alive but the target was just beyond them in the end despite Austin’s excellent innings of 29 not out.

The full scorecard is on Play-Cricket:
Successful weekend for the 1st Team

Saturday 13th August 2022

Brentwood 1st team made it eight successive Hambro Foundation Premier League wins when they defeated Hadleigh & Thundersley by 68 runs at the Old County Ground on Saturday.

Batting first on a very good pitch, all the Brentwood top four scored freely with skipper Aaron West making 43, fellow opener Ed Ballard 45, and Tom Oakley 64 but it was Chris Green’s 109 that was the highlight, an innings that included eight 4s and six 6s.

In reply, Hadleigh made 268-7 and never seriously threatened to win the match despite Sam Handley’s 72 and veteran Roy Smith’s 86. The result saw Brentwood overtake Hadleigh in the league table and reclaim 2nd position.

Sunday 14th August

On Sunday the 1st team hosted Surrey club Spencer in the semi-final of the Conference Cup and a close match saw Brentwood win by 16 runs to reach the final which will be against Camberley with the match to be played on Saturday 17th September at Harefield CC.

The in-form Tom Oakley was Brentwood’s star man with an innings of 111. He was well supported by Richard Horswill, 36, as Brentwood posted a total of 224-9 from 40 overs. When Spencer replied Harry Phillips took a wicket in the first over but a second-wicket stand between Toby Pratt and George Roberts put Spencer in control until Jack Levy broke through taking three quick wickets in the space of two overs. At 155-4 the visitors were still in the game but they lost three quick wickets again and despite 34 from Ollie Bocking they fell short with Harry Phillips, Aaron West and Harri Smith each taking two wickets.

Brentwood Whippets win Under-9 Cup final

Under 9 Cup Final Brentwood Whippets v Billericay

Billericay U9’s 67-8. Brentwood U9’s 71-4

Brentwood won by 6 wickets

On a glorious late summer morning at Harold Wood CC, the Brentwood under 9 Whippets produced a stunning performance to round off an exceptional season.

With the East and West league titles already secured as well as the softball league, victory against Billericay in the knockout cup final would ensure a remarkable quadruple.

Winning the toss, Whippets captain Dylan invited Billericay to bat under a clear blue sky.

They were quickly into their stride, and despite the excellent opening spells from James and Charlie were beginning to build an excellent opening partnership.

Nick was brought on and removed the dangerous Adam for an excellent 24 for the Whippets first wicket in the 6th over with the score on 29. Elliot then trapped Archie LBW in the next over, batting now appeared to be getting much more of a challenge. Nick and Elliot made scoring difficult, but Jash and Kaman took the score to 57 when Jash was superbly run out by Stanley, who swooped in and threw down the stumps.

Billericay still looked to be in a strong position with 10 overs left but were then blown away by pacy spells from Zach and Stan. First Zach struck with an edge down the leg side expertly caught by wicket keeper Percy to remove Kamran who walked despite not being given out in a great display of sportsmanship, then bowling the new batsman next ball. Not to be outdone, Stanley forced a top edge from a short-pitched ball that was well caught by Tommy at square leg, and then bowled the new batsman first up. 4 wickets in two overs had really changed the game, Amber kept the pressure on with a tidy over and James and Josh completed the 20 overs in great style, James clean bowling Adi in the final over with a trademark in-swinger to set Brentwood a target of 68.

Having lost to Billericay earlier in the season in the Whippets only defeat in the league, it was clear this would not be easy on a difficult pitch against a strong Billericay bowling attack.

Captain Dylan and Tommy Rose were sent out to open the innings, Tommy starting off with a fine shot to the backward point boundary for 4. Dylan departed in the second over bowled by a ball that stayed low from the bowling of Jash and Tommy followed being bowled by Nitin for a quick fire 9 leaving Brentwood 11-2. Percy joined Nick at the crease, and Percy in particular quickly got to work, placing the ball expertly between fielders, quickly reducing the deficit. Nick was bowled for 6 bringing Elliot to partner Percy and Elliot reigned in his normally aggressive game to play a support Role as Percy continued to score freely.

Percy was finally out caught for 29, leaving Zach to hit the winning boundary as Brentwood won by 6 wickets with 5 overs to spare.

This was an excellent team effort by the Whippets, an all-round bowling and fielding display of high quality despite the considerable distraction of an ice cream van, and the match winning innings by Percy showing great skill and maturity. Special thanks must go to Jan West in her tireless work in organising the leagues and cup competitions. It seemed there would be very little if any cricket this season due to the pandemic, instead the Whippets have enjoyed an unbelievable season.

Third team report

Brentwood 3rd XI 148-3, Shenfield 3rd XI 147

Brentwood win by seven wickets

A match delayed by rain and interrupted by a hail storm ended with the sun shining on Brentwood IIIs as they put their good friends from down the road to the sword in the campaign opener.

It was a typical early-season scene that greeted the home players as they emerged from their winter hibernation in varying degrees of readiness for the summer ahead: covers on, outfield lush and damp, grey clouds skidding across the sky, first team into the second hour of incomprehensible warming-up procedures.

The sun soon showed its face, the back-pitch covers came off. Twenty minutes later, they were back on as the rain sluiced down, leading to a delayed start.

Not even heaving away three covers with flat tyres and gutters blocked by dead leaves can dampen first-game enthusiasm, though, especially when you have inserted the oppo and Dave Balroop has arrived in time to take the new cherry, so it was a vibrant, confident Brentwood team who eventually took to the field.

After a slow start, the honour of first wicket of 2019 went to Paul Degg. Shenfield opener Max Bear’s eyes lit up when Degg sent down a long hop but he fell into a Bear trap and mistimed what was Degg’s slower ball to Ash Medell at midwicket.

Balroop withdrew from the attack after five economical overs to be replaced by the svelte figure of Bryan Atkins, fresh from a winter of hard graft in the gym. Atkins immediately hit a probing line and length and was rewarded with the wicket of the other opener, well snaffled by a diving Nirav Parekh at mid-on.

The skies had been darkening and play was halted after 20 overs by hail (the actual hard, icy stuff that hurts) with the score 40 for two, Brentwood players heaving the covers back on again before puffing and panting their way to dry land.

Play resumed after 30 minutes and some more puffing and panting with the covers, which meant Shenfield would be facing a reduced allocation of 44 overs (39 for Brentwood). Peter Bainbridge had just enough energy left to claim a caught and bowled off Lee Newton, before Atkins induced a leading edge from Arun Gautham which was pouched by Medell at mid-off.

Ollie Todd carted Bainbridge straight to the one man out in the deep, Jack Payne, then Garry Sapsford was clean bowled by the rampant Atkins to make the score 60 for six.

With the innings in danger of imploding, youngsters James McLean and Cameron Spicer opted for attack and struck some sumptuous shots, one of which rocketed straight at bowler Parekh, burst through his fingers and dealt him a painful blow to the head. Parekh bravely carried on but may have wished he had retired when his next delivery, a full bunger, disappeared over the midwicket boundary.

Balroop made a brief return to the attack without luck and with the score having suddenly shot past 100, the final overs were entrusted to Degg and Atkins. Degg caught and bowled Spicer and had Simon Jeffries caught in the ring by Roger Mahadeo before Shenfield captain Dave Castell dawdled over an easy two and was run out by a direct hit from the boundary from Payne. McNair had reached an impressive half-century to bring respectability to the total before becoming Atkins’s fourth victim when caught by Parekh off the last delivery of the innings.

Brentwood dined reasonably contentedly, hoping that the drying conditions would act in their batsmen’s favour. After a late dash back to the pavilion was required to retrieve the forgotten match ball, the innings was eventually opened by Payne and Medell.

The pair looked largely untroubled, Payne delighting the audience by hooking McLean off his nose for six in the manner of Ian Botham against Dennis Lillee at Old Trafford in 1981. The score had cruised to 38 when Medell punched a ball firmly enough for it just to carry to cover for a low catch. Roger Mahadeo came and went without troubling the scorers, being well caught at backward point, to leave Brentwood at 40 for two.

Nigel Bacon entered the scene in what promised to be the key stand between the two leading run scorers of last season. Bacon was not at his most fluent but Payne certainly was, creaming a succession of drives to the boundary with impeccable timing and passing 50 in the 21st over with the score 93 for two.

Bacon was showing doughty resolve at the other end and had battled his way to 29 from 62 balls when, after five dots, was given lbw off the sixth ball of the over (there are suspicions the umpire was becoming bored) to make the score 112 for three.

Jaitan Patel joined Payne and despite there being plenty of overs remaining opted to finish the game in a hurry, hitting four boundaries in his unbeaten 18. When the winning runs arrived in the 32nd over, Payne had scored 74 from 88 deliveries, including seven fours and three sixes. A classy innings.

A pleasing way to kick off the new season, helping complete a clean sweep of league wins for the club’s top four teams.

By Peter Bainbridge

We Will Remember Them

On 11 November 2018, 10,000 members of the public will have the unique opportunity to form a procession past the Cenotaph in central London, to pay tribute to those that served during the First World War.

This unique commemoration on the 100th anniversary of the signing of the Armistice, will recognise the significance of the end of the First World War, and the sacrifice made by so many men and women during the war.

To mark the occasion Brentwood Cricket Club is creating a 'Roll of Honour' commemorating those members who gave their lives in the service of their country during the Great War and World War II. The Roll of Honour on the Club's website describes how the outbreak of the First World War 'seriously curtailed' the Club's activities and commemorates two of the first members of the Club to lose their lives whilst on active service: Lieutenants Dougal Campbell Clifford Sewell and Hamilton Henry Travers

A comprehensive record of Club members is not currently available. Brentwood Cricket Club is conducting ongoing research to compile a record of those members who lost their lives in the service of their country. It would be very grateful to hear from members of the general public who have information that might assist in this research. Please contact David Berry on 07969 621774 or email david_berry@tiscali.co.uk.
