U11 Indoor Final Champions

Posted by Gill Bell on 24 March 2014

With all eight squad members available for the match, selection was going to be difficult. The final team was announced a few days before the final, meaning that Oliver Cohen and Henry Deacon, would not be playing this time.

The full squad turned up at the County ground, complete with a hailstorm, but soon preceded to warm up, complete with CIK sponsored T Shirts, in club colours. The manager, Simon Knightbridge, was stuck in traffic, due to the Brentwood half marathon, so the boys started to practice their bowling on their own, showing great maturity and team commitment.

Having lost the toss, Hutton put us in to bat. Jack Levy and William Davey got us off to a great start, scoring 10 off the first over. A missed chance in the 3rd, a dropped catch hit by Will, meant that after 3 overs, we were 28 for 0. Scoring was slow but assured, the boys taking chances when available. The 5th over saw the first wicket fall, Jack Levy hitting out, off the wall, only to be caught, leaving the crease for 17. Ben Fordham, joined Will, and both boys kept the score ticking over, until Ben was run out in the 8th, for 6, leaving the score at 64 for 2 off 8. Jacob Knightbridge came in at 4. Will, still batting with strength,  hit a 6 meaning he had to retire on 26. A fantastic effort! PJ Jaques joined Jacob at the crease, while Hutton stepped up the pressure, with a few dot balls. PJ gave Hutton a chance, nearly caught and bowled, before the 9th over came to an end at 72 for 2. Some impressive fast running between the wickets, by Jacob and PJ, during the 10th & 11th overs, put the Hutton fielders under pressure. Jacob hit the back wall twice in the 11th over before being caught for 15, leaving the score at a respectable 95 for 3 off 11. Max Scourfield came to the crease with an over to go, PJ on strike. Confusion over the bowler, meant the 3 runs scored by PJ were null and void, and we started the over again, with a bowler that had not bowled the previous one! Being the last over, PJ hit out, both boys running well between the wickets. A huge 6 off the last ball, by PJ, meant he finished on 18 n.o, and Max on 4 n.o. A huge 17 runs off the last over meant that BCC finished on 112 for 3.

BCC opened the bowling with Jack. Some tight fielding produced a close run out, but Hutton ended the over 11 for no loss. Jacob took a wicket with his 3rd ball of the second over, with a chance of a catch from his last ball, to end the 2nd 18 for 1. Hutton scored quickly off the next few overs, while BCC missed a few chances of run out, ending the 6th over 64 for 1. The missed chances seemed to focus the boys and in the 7th over, came the break through. With a new batman at the crease, due to retirement, Jacob bowled, causing confusion, giving an opportunity for another run out. Surely they would take this one? A superb throw by Will allowed Max, the wicket keeper for the day, to remove the bails, finishing the 7th over 71 for 2. Three dot balls from PJ added pressure, with a LBW appeal off the 4th ball. Some impressive tight bowling meant Hutton only scored 4 runs off the 8th over, adding more pressure to the batmen. A direct hit, by Will, meant another run out from the first ball of the next over. Some great fielding and excellent ,tight bowling by Ben, meant that Hutton had only scored 4 runs and lost a wicket in the 9th over. The boys could see that the winners trophy was within their grasp. All they had to do was keep up the momentum and it would be theirs……wouldn't it?? Another close run out in the 10th, and another batsman retired, meant that going into the 11th Hutton needed 23 off 12 balls to win. Another excellent throw by Will for another run out, meant the pressure was building. So much so that a few balls later, Jack threw the ball in for yet another run out, leaving Hutton on 98 for 5, with the last man standing. The final over, Hutton needing 15 to win, and Jacob had the ball. Four runs off the first ball, applied the pressure, before the 5th run out of the match, thrown in by Jack Levy. Brentwood had Hutton all out for 102, with 4 balls remaining!!

This was a thrilling match and the way all the boys played throughout the tournament meant that they were worthy winners. Can I name a Man of the Match? Personally, I don't think so, however I must give a special mention to William Davey for his excellent batting and fielding. To me there were 8 Man of the Match awards. All the boys played as one team throughout. A special mention must go to Oliver and Henry who sat out this match. Having such a group of talented players, it is always difficult to leave anyone out. Both boys supported the team throughout. I am looking forward to seeing this team go from strength to strength over the coming seasons.
