U15 Chargers Win the CEDCB Cup Final

Posted by Gill Bell on 8 September 2014

The Brentwood team turned up at a busy Bentley Cricket Club with the very tricky task of trying to beat a Hutton team who have some excellent players and have had a very successful season. After much discussion a plan was set. If the toss was won (which it was) Brentwood would bat first and basically attempt to run at any possibility of getting a single. This may sound a gung- ho approach to batting but with 11 batsmen who can bat ( and probably 5 who could do a similar job but  were not selected) then it seemed a calculated risk worth taking.

Kimble and Payne opened up and to the shock of the Hutton fielders just went for runs at any opportunity, with a few lusty blows from Kimble Brentwood were 20 off of 3 overs before Payne was just run out after attempting another sharp run.

This format continued right through the Brentwood innings, loud calling, aggressive running. The pick of the batsmen were Kimble 22, Stone 24, Fox 14 , Denny 13 and Philpott 8. Brentwood finished  off 109 for 8 from their 20 overs. All the batsmen had contributed purely by their attitude to play for the team rather than worry about losing their wicket.

This was not a large total probably about 25 runs short of what the team were hoping for but the runs were on the board and the wicket was not playing too well and the Brentwood boys were up for the challenge.

Stone and Wingrove opened the bowling and it was Wingrove with his left arm spin that made the first break through with Buttleman taking a nice catch behind the stumps. The game ebbed and flowed, wickets were taken but runs were added to the Hutton score.

Probably the turning point in the game was when Fordham had the dangerous ex Brentwood player Whetstone caught by Payne at gully. Hutton’s main batsmen were now out and their tail seemed longer than Brentwood’s

It was left to Stone to take the last wicket LBW as Brentwood won by 21 runs in the 18th over.

The bowling stats were

Stone 3.4 overs 1 for 21

Wingrove 3 overs 2 for 8

Fordham 4 overs 3 for 22

Payne 4 overs 1 for 18

Brailey 2 overs 1 for 10

Gautham 1 overs 1 for 6

This was a fantastic team effort from all the players.

Thank you for making the management and coaching team so very happy!
