1st team bounce back and it’s a good day for all Brentwood’s league teams

For the second time in three weeks all four of the Brentwood CC league sides won on Saturday.

After a double-loss to Chelmsford last weekend, the 1st XI bounced back with a resounding win at Buckhurst Hill, debutant left arm spinner Paul Humphries taking 4-17. Brentwood elected to bat first but it was soon evident that it was not going to be an easy pitch on which to bat and the spinners were soon introduced on a turning track. After losing Tom Oakley and Jon Walford, Guy Balmford (31) and Aaron West (26) put on 61 for the third wicket before both were dismissed in the same over by Willem Scholtz. Peter Younghusband (29) then held the innings together with support from James Redwood (20) and Jake Wickham (14) but Brentwood were dismissed for 165 in the 49th over. Scholtz finished with 3-19 and Daniel Platt 3-45 for the home side and it looked an under par score.

But Charlie Griffiths (2-22) and Tom Moore (2-20) reduced the Buckhurst Hill response to 38-4. Younghusband returned tidy figures of 7-3-8-1 and the introduction of Humphries saw the tail quickly capitulate as Buckhurst Hill were dismissed for 87.

The 2nd XI remain top of the league after a comfortable run chase against Woodford Wells at the Old County Ground. They restricted the Wells to 221-7 from 45 overs with Matt Bell taking 4-57, Richard Horswill 2-43 and left arm spinner, Tom Wingrove, bowling a tidy spell of nine overs for 24 runs. When Brentwood batted, Kieran Emmanuel (32), Dougie Maxwell (38) and Tom Phillipe (64) all batted well before Bell (26 not out) and Horswill (18 not out) completed the run chase with just over four overs to spare. On the back pitch at the OCG in the 3rd XI Premier Division, it was bottom-of-the-table Brentwood against table-toppers Chelmsford but it was Brentwood who came out on top. Batting first, they made 185-9, Richard Walford scoring 56 and Nigel Bacon 45. They then dismissed Chelmsford for 156, Jon Hilliard taking 3-29 while Peter Bainbridge, Jack Payne, Cameron Maxwell took a wicket apiece before the experienced Chris Boon Sr. (2-18) and Mick Payne (2-8) wrapped up the victory. The 4th XI also enjoyed a win against Chelmsford by 7 wickets at Chelmer Park. Chasing 232-9 (3-29 for Dan Ranns and two wickets for Luke Ranns and Ewan Smith), Luke Brailey (82) and Andy Maxwell (81) led the way, supported by Barry Brookes (26) Ryan Pocock (24 not out) and Arun Giautham (8 not out).
